This lovely, comfortable, hotel is sited in pleasant grounds that include generous parking just outside Barrow in Furness. It represents excellent value for money.

It was delightful to have a room in the Lutyens house, giving the room great character. The hotel was comfortable and relaxed. The bar meals and breakfast were excellent. The hotel staff were friendly, efficient and attentive.

The hotel itself was a step away from you average hotel chain

The fact that when I'd inadvertantly dropped all my credit cards in the car park without realising, they were returned to me even before I'd noticed they were missing - prompt and honest staff. All staff at all times courteous and helpful. Beautiful old building.

The shower in room 57 did not work, but we did not mention it, so perhaps you could pass the info on? At breakfast, some of the guests had t-shirts on revealing heavily-tattooed arms, detracting from the ambience - perhaps a dress code applicable?

lovely room, garden, bar/restaurant with excelent service

modern desin of new part of the hotel, mixture of to meny styles inside the hotel

The hotel was excellent the bedroom and grounds were stunning. The hotel had put on an Easter Egg hunt which was most enjoyable.

I went with a toddler and found some staff less than accomadating with her. I felt let down with the experience as we were made to feel un welcome in the hotels restarant and bar and ended up having room service instead.

Ease of location for the purpose of my stay. Value for money was excellent. The staff and facilities were very good.

Staff are always very helpful and friendly. Restaurant is very attractive with excellent views of the gardens and the breaksfast selection is top class. Our stay was for convenience to a local event so position is good. Hotel is also convenient for the Cumbrian coast route (including train).

The hotel was very clean and the room was of a really good size! We felt it was great value for money and breakfast was included. There was a good selection of food avaliable for breakfast. The grounds of the hotel were very well kept.

Unfortunately there was a large wedding going on the same weekend and the music and fireworks were very loud! However the hotel did phone us to tell us about this before our trip.

Good location and well tended grounds; the gardener is to be congratulated on his flower beds and displays. Ullswater suite is very spacious, and we had a peaceful and good night's rest. No noise to disturb us at all. Hotel appearance is impressive. The service was good with smiling staff. Nice to see a real fire in the hallway. We enjoyed the breakfast and its choice, but happily didn't opt for the 'Continental' which looked a bit meagre.

On arrival late at night the first impression was that it looked a bit dingy and down at heal. This improved in the daylight the next morning. Reception needs updating as does the bathroom and general decor in the room. It has at some time in the past been roughly painted even though the original quality of the room must have been much better. Domestos would remove the bits of mould around the bath. The standard lamp did not work and as no-one showed us how to we had to work out ourselves the master switch for the bed lamps, tv, etc. The hand book/ guide should show the history of the building. Not over keen to know that you accept pets, we didn't like the idea of someone's dogs using our room (but did not actually small any).

    • Couple

The hotel was very clean and well presented. It was a lovely traditional hotel and it had a relaxing atmosphere.

The room was nice however the bathroom was not. It was very tatty and could have been a lot nicer.

Elegant castle with surprise value for money

    • Couple
      9.6

Location was great - easy access to the Lake District

A bit loud on the Friday evening due to a wedding taking place

    • Family with children
      10.0

The relaxing environment, combined with helpfullness and consideration from all staff. Food was fantastic and attitude from all staff towards family and small children was amazing.

Cant complain or fault the hotel for anything. It really was fantastic.

    • Group of friends
      9.6

Relaxed comfortable atmosphere with helpfull staff. The assortment of breakfasts available tempted our conservative Canadian visitors away from their conservative diets of English type breakfasts, and my wife who is an extremely choosy eater started the day well with the selection available.
